Each method will be demonstrated and then a drawing will be made to try out the technique.

Do you love watercolor painting, but find it overly restrictive and frustrating in terms of an inherent lack of flexibility in the traditional methodology of the medium? This class will demonstrate the possibilities for use of watercolor in a more flexible and “editable” manner than is typically possible – more akin to oil painting, not with a different kind of paint, but rather a different kind of painting surface.
By employing a smooth surfaced paper stock, as opposed traditional heavy-toothed watercolor paper, this allows a painting to be built up in stages and reworked numerous times. This can facilitate a “loose” approach, where roughly blocked-in color areas can be refined down to a more detailed image. Or, a more “detailed” approach is also possible, carefully developing an initially detailed image and then loosening it in later stages. The inherent flexibility of the process allows for a variety of applications in this regard.
If you are looking to free up your approach to watercolor painting, with increased latitude and workability, this class will be of interest whether you’re already an experienced practitioner or completely new to the medium.

Composition is all about arranging space and designing the subject in its best light. The arrangement invites your audience in and is the most important decision to make before you begin. No matter how perfect your technique, it does not carry the same importance as the composition. This workshop will cover the basics of composition. The Elements of Design and the way they are used with the Principles of Design will be discussed with examples and exercises. Leading the eye, placement of the subject and how to make your drawing interesting to the audience are topics we will cover, along with common pitfalls to avoid.
Some still life arrangements will be provided as subject matter in order to best hone our skills, no photographs.
Supplies: Any drawing media, drawing pad or paper, eraser

Discover the vibrant, velvety world of gouache in this hands-on, one-day workshop designed for all skill levels. Often described as "opaque watercolor," gouache gives you the best of both worlds: the smooth blending of watercolors and the bold layering of acrylics.
If you struggle with watercolor, this medium is more forgiving and easier to learn. Jim finds gouache great for plein air painting because it mixes and applies quickly, and you can make corrections on the fly.
Jim will do a demo, then lead paint-along exercises. By the end of the day, you will master fluid mixing, control your opacity, and walk away with a completed original painting. Bring your own photo reference or use one Jim provides.

The Acrylic Pouring technique aka Fluid Art allows you to apply color in puddles, pools, and marble-like patterns. Pouring results in a smooth, glossy paint film that is perfectly even and blemish free. There are no paintbrushes necessary for this technique as we will be making acrylic paint fluid and pouring onto the canvas. It is particularly popular with beginners as it allows you to create quick paintings with dramatic, contemporary results. Ann will demonstrate two different techniques to pour fluid paint onto a 12”x12” canvas. You must be forewarned though, this technique is quite addictive!
SUPPLIES: $15 mandatory supply fee due to the instructor on the day of the class.
You can see more of Ann Benton Yeager’s work at www.annbentonart.com or check out her work in Studio #103 on the first floor of The Millworks in midtown Harrisburg or in her new studio at the Lancaster Art Vault in downtown Lancaster. "I always begin my work with musings. I am not sure that the work is so different from years past… what I am sure of is that I am different. I use the same techniques as always in a layered, lost and found way. My media continues to be mixed: watercolor, white acrylic, ink, lead and colored pencils. I like contrast, edge-to-edge interest, and a story: yours and mine. Mostly, I am absolutely in love with the mystery of inspiration and how it affects the process. I have a painting that is entirely different from the image with which I began. It tells its own story!" - Lynne
