Adult Workshop

Our focus will be on creating different textural effects with shading. Soft cloth used as drapery and objects on hand will provide textural surfaces to observe. We’ll work with different mark making techniques such as stippling, hatching, cross hatching, and imprinting using impressions. Directional contour marks will be made to create value and form. Each method will be demonstrated and then a drawing will be made to try out the technique.

Actual objects will be provided as subjects, no photographs.

November 19th | 12pm-3pm | All Levels | $75M $90NM

Adult Workshop

Composition is all about arranging space and designing the subject in its best light. The arrangement invites your audience in and is the most important decision to make before you begin. No matter how perfect your technique, it does not carry the same importance as the composition. This workshop will cover the basics of composition. The Elements of Design and the way they are used with the Principles of Design will be discussed with examples and exercises. Leading the eye, placement of the subject and how to make your drawing interesting to the audience are topics we will cover, along with common pitfalls to avoid.

Some still life arrangements will be provided as subject matter in order to best hone our skills, no photographs.

Supplies: Any drawing media, drawing pad or paper, eraser

If you struggle with watercolor, this medium is more forgiving and easier to learn. Jim finds gouache great for plein air painting because it mixes and applies quickly, and you can make corrections on the fly.

Jim will do a demo, then lead paint-along exercises. By the end of the day, you will master fluid mixing, control your opacity, and walk away with a completed original painting. Bring your own photo reference or use one Jim provides.

Required Materials List

•Gouache Paint Set: Artist-grade or student-grade tubes (Essential colors: Primary Red/Magenta, Primary Blue/Cyan, Primary Yellow, Burnt Umber, and a large 37 ml tube of Titanium White). A wonderful starter set available on Amazon with a wide range of colors is the Shin Han Professional Designer Gouache 15ml Tube 24 Colors Set A. You will still need to purchase White separately: Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache, 37ml tube, Permanent White

•Brushes: Soft synthetic watercolor brushes (1x Medium Flat, 1x Small Round #2, 1x Medium Round #6), or any Watercolor brushes you currently use.

•Paper: 9”x12”, 100% Cotton Cold Press Watercolor Paper or Heavyweight Mixed Media Paper (minimum 140lb / 300gsm). Watercolor board can also be used.

•Palette: Plastic, ceramic, or airtight stay-wet palette for mixing. Basically, the same as you use for watercolor

•Water Containers: 2 jars or cups (one for cleaning, one for fresh water).

•Essentials: Washi/drafting tape (for crisp edges), paper towels or a cloth rag, and a standard pencil/eraser for initial sketching.

Acrylic Pour with Ann Benton Yeager (Saturday, December 05, 2026)

December 5th | 1-4pm | All Levels | $55M $65NM

Adult Workshop

The Acrylic Pouring technique aka Fluid Art allows you to apply color in puddles, pools, and marble-like patterns. Pouring results in a smooth, glossy paint film that is perfectly even and blemish free. There are no paintbrushes necessary for this technique as we will be making acrylic paint fluid and pouring onto the canvas. It is particularly popular with beginners as it allows you to create quick paintings with dramatic, contemporary results. Ann will demonstrate two different techniques to pour fluid paint onto a 12”x12” canvas. You must be forewarned though, this technique is quite addictive!

LYNNE YANCHA A.W.S. has received national recognition for her luminous watercolors: beautiful paintings of children, animals, still-life, and landscapes. Yancha’s sensitivity to her subjects, superb drawing, painting, and timeless realism is captivating.

Lynne resides in Mifflinburg, PA and has been conducting watercolor workshops at YAA for years.
"I always begin my work with musings. I am not sure that the work is so different from years past… what I am sure of is that I am different. I use the same techniques as always in a layered, lost and found way. My media continues to be mixed: watercolor, white acrylic, ink, lead and colored pencils. I like contrast, edge-to-edge interest, and a story: yours and mine. Mostly, I am absolutely in love with the mystery of inspiration and how it affects the process. I have a painting that is entirely different from the image with which I began.
