PORTRAIT DRAWING with Van Pafchek, Thursday's 1-4pm
Portraiture is a timeless subject that has been of interest to people throughout history. The ability to draw a portrait is an essential skill for any artist. In this course, students will learn to draw realistic portraits as they work from the live model in  the studio. Always working towards a likeness of their subject, they will learn to identify key forms related to the structure and anatomy of the head and upper body.  In addition to drawing the model, class will consist of live demos, group and individual critiques and brief lectures. Although homework is not required, optional assignments including self-portraits and master copies will be suggested for those interested.

Students will:

  • learn to use angles and plum lines in order to create accurate line drawings.
  • improve their ability to achieve accurate proportion.
  • learn to reveal form and value as they practice shading techniques.
  • learn the structure the of the head and upper body.
  • learn to apply their knowledge of portrait anatomy to the drawing process.
  • develop methods and skills necessary to create a finished, accurate portrait  drawing.

TUITION: $150 Members / $175 Non-Members

(A Supply List is included with your completed registration confirmation email. Masks are required at this time, regardless of vaccination status. If you should have any questions for your instructor, simply reply to your confirmation email and it will go to your instructor.)

Savannah “Van” Pafchek (b. 1997) received her BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2020, where she studied drawing along with taking biology courses at Johns Hopkins University. In the studio, much of her time is spent drawing and studying the figure from life using graphite, charcoal and conté. Her figure drawings place emphasis on structural anatomy and using value to reveal complex forms. On the side, she explores methods of wildlife illustration, with a particular focus on regional bird species and their habitats.
