APPROACH AND METHODS TO MIXING COLORS, CONTROLING EDGES AND USING MASKING FLUID IN WATERCOLOR

The goals of this wokshop are to challenge you artistically and technically and learn to develop a strategy of thinking ahead in planning future paintings. This class is for intermediate to advanced watercolor aritst, understanding of the medium is required to take this course.

You will execute watercolor painting exercises that will cover:

• Mixing colors
• Edges:
• Prevent and/ or fixing ‘tide lines.’
• Creating soft edge
• Creating hard edges
• Masking fluid:
• Straight line
• Width control
• Lifting color

I will display original paintings so that you can see my approach to texture using the above-mentioned techniques and have a chance to ask questions in real time.

Materials:

• 140 lb. (or heavier) watercolor paper cold press (block) – 9” x 12”
• 140 lb. watercolor paper cold press scraps
• Ruling pen
• Masking fluid (preferably tinted)
• Painter’s tape
• Two triangle rulers or two (thin) metal rulers
• Gum Arabic
• Rubbing alcohol
• Hand towel or dry kitchen sponge(s)
• Watercolor palette
• Three plastic containers for water
• Misting bottle
• Large plastic palette knife: "Scotty" Knife or Trowel Offset

• Natural or synthetic
• Round size 0, 2, 4, 8 (or 10 or 12)
• Flat ¾”, 2”
• Bristle (acrylic/ oil paint)
• Flat (Filaments are longer than the width) size 1 and 8.
• Bright (filaments are shorter than the length) size 1 or 2 and 4 or 6.
• Optional: Rosemary & Co Eradicator: small and or medium
• Old credit card
• Graphite pencils (2H or HB and 6B)

• Ultramarine Blue
• Alizarin Crimson
• Cad Red
• Cad Yellow Med
• Burnt Sienna
• Burnt Umber
• Prussian Blue
• Any other colors you like to work with

About the instructor:

Luis F. Pérez was born in Colombia and raised in Bogota and New York City, where he graduated from the School of Visual Arts. After work in the fashion industry and community arts programming, he began in 2015 to present his work in outdoor exhibitions.

He has won numerous awards, and his work has appeared in various watercolor and drawing publications (Splash 17, 19, 20, 22, 23,24; The Best of Drawing; Stroke of Genius; Southwest Art, Artist’s Magazine’s ‘Artist to watch’ 2023, Art of Watercolor Issue 60, Mid Atlantic Exhibition, TWSA).

He is currently a Signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society (on The Mid-Atlantic Awards Committee), Delaware Watercolor Society, Annapolis Watercolor Club and the Washington Watercolor Club. He is represented by the Highlandtown Gallery in Baltimore, MD.
