This intensive workshop introduces the process of composing, blocking, and rendering portrait paintings from observation from a live model*. Oil painting principles covered in this workshop include color theory, tonal development, and form resolution utilizing a traditional academic “flesh” or “limited” palette.
Recommended for students with intermediate drawing ability, ages 18+
Equipment & Supplies
Brushes of various sizes (fans, rounds, flats)
Mediums: linseed oil, Turpenoid or odorless mineral spirits
Oil paint: Titanium White, Chinese Vermilion or English Red, Mars Black, Yellow Ochre
Palette (wood or tear-away is acceptable)
Palette knife
Rags or paper towels
Acrylic primed canvas or pre-primed canvas board (Recommended size: 16x20” or 18x24”)

About
Robert Dale Williams studied classical drawing and painting techniques at the New York Academy of Art Graduate School of Figurative Art. Following graduation from the Academy in 2004, he furthered his studies under Odd Nerdrum during three summer residencies in Norway. A guest lecturer at the Susquehanna Art Museum and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, Williams joined the Continuing Studies faculty at the New York Academy of Art in 2022, drawing from his extensive experience as an instructor of drawing, painting, anatomy, and design courses at six art institutions. Featured in collections worldwide, he has exhibited in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, and Norway
