The quality and caliber of our teaching staff are truly special here at YAA. Offering year round sessions, we contract award-winning instructors from our region and beyond. Our classes, workshops and kids camps offer a variety of mediums, art styles and experience levels for adults and children. From watercolor and oil, to anime and collage, there really is something for everyone!

YAA is also the perfect venue for active seniors to pursue long-denied creative interests. We encourage anyone who has an interest in developing their artistic abilities to explore the opportunities available here at YAA.

    This 4-Week Class will cover the benefits of painting using the reductive method and painting with Water-Soluble oils. Students will follow Jim’s demos by painting on a provided gesso-coated hardboard. We will apply paint with brushes and palette knives and remove it with squeegees, paper towels, and Q-Tips. This method is fun and helps you quickly define your tonal values. Switching from harsh solvents to water when mixing oil paints is a game-changer!

    Instruction over this 4-week Class covers: Materials and Supplies, Reductive Painting techniques, Glazing, Design/Composition, Tonalism, Preliminary Sketching, Types of Edges & Transitions.

    Discover the joy of painting in the open air with artist Jim Starr in this welcoming Pop-up Series is perfect for artists of all levels! Plein air, a French term meaning “in the open air” refers to the practice of painting outdoors, capturing the natural light, vibrant colors, and shifting moods of the landscape in real time. 

    Pennsylvania in the summer offers a breathtaking palette- lush greens, wildflowers in bloom, and golden afternoon light- an inspiring setting for anyone eager to connect with nature through art.

    This first session will take place at the YAA. 

    In this session we will go cover materials need and location details. Then we the basic techniques by painting from a photo reference. Please bring any materials you have on hand. 

    Each session requires individual registration, so you can sign up for as many (or as few) as you’d like.

    The Acrylic Pouring technique aka Fluid Art allows you to apply color in puddles, pools, and marble-like patterns. Pouring results in a smooth, glossy paint film that is perfectly even and blemish free. There are no paintbrushes necessary for this technique as we will be making acrylic paint fluid and pouring onto the canvas. It is particularly popular with beginners as it allows you to create quick paintings with dramatic, contemporary results. Ann will demonstrate two different techniques to pour fluid paint onto a 12”x12” canvas. You must be forewarned though, this technique is quite addictive!

    SUPPLIES: $15 mandatory supply fee due to the instructor on the day of the class.

    In this workshop, the focus is on figurative and animal subjects, exploring essential aspects such as power through design, paint application, the significance of light, mystery, and embracing the beauty of mistakes.     JIM STARR achieved his dream of pursuing a career in art by earning a BFA in Art/Illustration from Carnegie Mellon University. For over 25 years, he has worked as a freelance illustrator, creating digital art for advertising, corporate, and editorial projects, including children's books. In addition to his work as an illustrator, Jim is a fine artist who regularly paints with traditional media and takes on commissioned projects.

    Jim has continuously honed his skills, particularly in watercolor, through classes and workshops with master watercolorists. He is an active member of the Pittsburgh Illustrators Club and the PA Watercolor Society, and he holds Signature Membership in the Baltimore Watercolor Society.

    Discover the beauty of the human form through loose, expressive painting. Using acrylic, collage, and intuitive techniques, we’ll explore how to suggest figures in abstract work. Includes live model time, photo references, and creative play. Loosen up, let go, and paint with heart.

    In this creative, hands-on workshop, we'll focus on discovering and abstracting the human figure in your artwork. Whether you're just beginning to incorporate people into your paintings or you're looking to loosen up and push boundaries, this class will offer tools and inspiration to help you grow.

    We'll explore a variety of methods—lighting and shape recognition, reductive painting, working from photographs, and building compelling backgrounds. You'll learn how to suggest the presence of a figure without rigid outlines, using intuitive mark-making, layering, acrylic paint, and collage.

    A portion of the workshop will include drawing and painting from a live, clothed model, giving you the opportunity to observe and interpret the figure in real time. Together, we'll experiment with simplifying forms, finding gestures, and letting go of perfection to embrace expressive abstraction.

    Spend the day with me learning to trust your eye, loosen your brushstrokes, and bring a soulful human element into your art.

    ANDI SIMPSON lives in south central Pennsylvania, studied fine art/art history and graduated with a BFA from Frostburg State University.

    She works with a variety of mediums, including acrylics, inks, and oils and considers her art to be abstract. Her work exhibits an ethereal sense of warmth, light, and love but also elicits the sensitive chaos found in nature. Her paintings begin with a foundation comprised of multiple layers of color and a variety of textures. Building from that background, she allows intuition to guide her. Defined shapes and forms present themselves organically as the piece progresses. She does not intend her work to espouse a specific message or extract a uniform reaction. Instead, she hopes to deliver a perpetually novel experience to each viewer, evoking unique visceral responses.  

    She created andiann studio to bring her art into the creative wedding realm and to broaden her reach beyond local and regional markets to clients’ homes across the country.

  • POP-UP EXPANDING YOUR PALETTE WITH ENAMEL with Don Conely

    Do you consider oils to be the medium of choice for your work, but desire something beyond the usual application of tube-based pigment to canvas? Or perhaps you want to produce larger pieces but are challenged by the notion of covering all that bare canvas? Maybe you’re an abstract painter and want to give your work a different dimension or character. Maybe all of the above?

    This class offers an alternate creative option: the use of enamel paint to enhance your current oil painting technique. The core concept involves the use of oil-based enamel paint to complement your standard palette of traditional pigments. This paint is sold in cans at outlets like Home Improvement Centers and Hardware Stores. It is “industrial” paint, used to paint a metal railing or touch up a tractor, branded as Rustoleum among other names. If you’re asking yourself, “Why would I want to use THAT stuff?”, There are numerous interesting aspects to its use, such as: its liquid nature, thick viscosity, gloss or matt finishes, and other unique characteristics. This is especially effective for abstract work, but not exclusively – it can be used for figurative subjects as well. The unique nature of this paint can really lend an expressive dimension to your work.

    This class will introduce the use of enamel to the traditional painting process. Topics covered will include: color choice; surface finishes; brush recommendations; application and mixing with tubebased paint; and working flat versus using an easel, among other aspects. Next day painting will also be covered - painting over the dried enamel surface for even more textural and tonal possibilities.

    This is a Demo and Lecture style Pop-up. No Materials are needed.

    Don Conley

    Don attended Carnegie-Mellon University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in Painting and Illustration. During the final year he studied under illustrious abstract painter Sam Gilliam. Upon graduation, Don pursued a thirty-plus year career in professional communications as an illustrator and graphic designer in the Washington DC area, while also producing his own painting and drawing. He recently relocated to the York area and has been an Adjunct Professor at York College since 2022. Don currently sells art through private commission and public sale.

    SUE MARRAZZO, ISAP, NCS, ISEA-NF is an award-winning experimental artist who works in collage, mixed media, acrylic, sculpture, and encaustic painting. Sue's art tends to be influenced by fashion, interior design, and art history. She believes, "Art is about learning to see." Sue's strengths as an artist are with color theory and composition. She describes her art as : "BOLD, COLORFUL, EXPERIMENTAL, and INDIVIDUALISTIC."

    Sue Marrazzo has exhibited in numerous local, regional, national and international juried shows, and exhibits. She currently teaches collage, abstract painting and experimental mixed media.

    JIM STARR achieved his dream of pursuing a career in art by earning a BFA in Art/Illustration from Carnegie Mellon University. For over 25 years, he has worked as a freelance illustrator, creating digital art for advertising, corporate, and editorial projects, including children's books. In addition to his work as an illustrator, Jim is a fine artist who regularly paints with traditional media and takes on commissioned projects.

    Jim has continuously honed his skills, particularly in watercolor, through classes and workshops with master watercolorists. He is an active member of the Pittsburgh Illustrators Club and the PA Watercolor Society, and he holds Signature Membership in the Baltimore Watercolor Society.

    We will meet at Lake View Pavilion at Gifford Pinchot State Park to start the day. This pavilion is right along the shore of the lake, with some evergreen and deciduous trees nearby.   It is a picturesque setting looking out over the water.  Some ideas for drawing subjects and a variety of techniques will be shared and discussed. 

    Weather permitting, a short hike to take photographs or make quick sketches will follow.  Beth Kepley-McNutt, Environmental Education Specialist, will lead this hike.  Think of this as a sort of “art safari” with an opportunity to collect lots of inspiring scenes, or pictures of examples of flora and fauna.  We will return to the shelter to enjoy a working lunch as we draw from the natural surroundings.

    If weather is more wet, we will remain at the shelter to draw found objects in lieu of the hike. 

    Composition and the Principles of Design will be discussed, along with ideas on how to capture form and texture. 

    Please note: this is a rain or shine workshop. We will only cancel if there is threat of thunderstorms, or excessive heat with no make-up date due to reservation of the pavilion. Cancellation Notice will be sent by email no later than 2 hours before the start of the event and will be at the discretion of the Instructor and York Art Association. 

    This unique learning experience is geared for adult artists who have registered for the workshop with the intent to draw; No children or other guests permitted.

    Do you feel rushed or indecisive in the store when you are trying to coordinate your work with matboard or frame samples? 

    Would you like some ideas about choosing mat colors or frame styles to best showcase your art? 

    This class will offer a few guidelines in choosing mat colors and frame styles to enhance your art.  There will be time to examine an assortment of colors and styles.  Matboard specifiers show the wide array of colors available currently.  Matboard corner samples will be on hand to demonstrate the effect of a variety of colors. Your art can be paired with frame chop samples to see what works for eye-catching results.

    You’ll be able to take home some simple directions for future reference.  Also, a list of shops will be shared where you can find supplies such as frames, matboard, glass and more.  You’ll receive a Crescent specifier which is a pamphlet showing actual paper samples of matboard colors.  Specifiers are no longer mailed on request, but Crescent has provided enough for each person in this workshop.

    If you have a work of art that you’d like to match with matboard or frames, bring it along.   This is a fun way to consider your preferences and bring out the best in your work. 

    There will be time for participants to ask general questions regarding framing choices, or techniques if you frame your own work.

    While the series is geared toward painters, artists of all mediums are welcome. Each session includes instruction, live demonstrations, and personalized feedback to support your growth. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Pennsylvania’s summer landscapes, this is a perfect opportunity to connect with nature and your creative practice.

    Kiwanis Lake: This location sits in the heart of Downtown York. This little duck pond is home to many birds, including the Great Egret and Black-Crowned Heron. The calm water and reflections create beautiful opportunities for capturing light, movement, and atmosphere.

    Each session requires individual registration, so you can sign up for as many (or as few) as you’d like.

Perfect for beginners, this hands-on class will guide you through the entire linocut printmaking process from sketching your design, carving your own linoleum block, to inking and printing your final artwork. Rogers, Bianca Rosen, and Bradley Hendershot, who have influenced the shaping of her own unique style. Her goal is to share her enthusiasm and joy for the arts while encouraging students to learn something new every day.     This unique tween/teen art camp, led by professional artist Annelise Vuono, offers an exceptional opportunity for young creatives ages 10-18. Participants will explore the design process, learning how to plan and execute a large-scale mural to be displayed in a public space.

    Throughout the camp, students will collaborate to bring Annelise's conceptualized design to life, applying their artistic skills to each stage of the project. Working together in the studio, these aspiring artists will gain hands-on experience with all phases of mural creation, from initial sketches to the final finishes. This immersive experience promises to inspire creativity, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment, all while contributing to a meaningful public art project.

    Bring your own projects and enjoy dedicated creative time in the classrooms at the York Art Association.

    These self-directed sessions provide artists with the opportunity to work independently, connect with fellow members, and utilize the Association’s space in a relaxed and supportive environment. Participants are welcome to stay for the full time or drop in for the time that best fits their schedule - it's really up to you on how you want to use this time to practice and create!

    Tables are available for $10 per session. Space is limited to 10 participants per session. No instruction will be provided.
