Art and creation has always been an integral part of my life. I began creating early on as a necessary form of self expression, creating costumes, portraits, illustrations – anything that was required to enrich my life experience and promote whimsy in the everyday. Becoming an art educator has contributed even further, providing a space in which I can support students of all ages in pursuing their whimsy and passion for creation. My own art is inspired by nature and humans, particularly people from the past. Photography from the 1800-1900’s fascinates me and presents a ghostlike portrait that presents a different facet of identity that I enjoy exploring in my own work. I’ve continued themes of nature and figures in my ceramic works, investigating the uncanny valley in both functional and decorative ceramic pieces. My most recent work has expanded into sola wood flower creation, working to bring wedding day dreams to life. I’ve continued expanding in my art education outside of Public School as well, teaching at Creative York, The York Art Association, Creatives on King, through Arts in Residence (Cultural Alliance), as well as my own business, Reptile Smiles. Combining animal advocates and art creation has been a powerful teaching tool that inspires students of all ages to create unhindered. Finally, I’ve stepped into the role of Curator at Creatives on King, working to advocate for, empower, and guide artists in their journey in the creation and sale of their work.

This workshop invites young artists to explore the work of Georgia O’Keeffe through poetry, drawing, and painting. Students will begin by writing a short poem inspired by O’Keeffe’s style and subjects, from vast Southwestern landscapes to delicate flowers and striking abstract forms. They will then create their own compositions using drawing and painting techniques, experimenting with color, form, and expression while celebrating the beauty and vision of one of America’s most iconic artists.

YESENIA "JESSIE" GROFT began her artistic journey as a child, often drawing alongside her father as he created beautiful oil paintings. Her love for painting was rekindled several years ago while attending a paint night with friends.
What began as a simple hobby developed into a motivating passion. As an artist, Jessie continues to hone in her style and technique. She learned techniques through tried and true methods, such as the Charles Bargue drawing course and sight-size.
As an instructor, she seeks to enthusiastically share her heartfelt belief that we all can learn to draw and paint to some degree – it just takes time to patiently learn and practice. She teaches her students to be willing to try new things and not to fear failure.
Her favorite mediums are charcoal on paper and acrylic on stretched or wooden canvas. She is a proud member of the York Art Association where she teaches youth classes.
