DEB WATSON is a self-taught artist. Although she displayed an early talent at art, her parents discouraged it. She spent her adult life working as nurse and raising a family, but continued to paint in her spare time.  As her work began winning awards and selling, Deb quit nursing to become a full time artist and teacher.

Now, her paintings have been exhibited throughout the U.S. in major art competitions and museums. Deb's watercolors have been published in national magazines and she's a recognized teacher, with how to paint books and a Craftsy class on Pet Portraits. CHRIS GOLD, from York, PA, started painting later in life. Her informal art education was gained by taking regional professionals’ workshops and classes.

Gold’s painting journey began in her mid-50’s with oils painting after the memory of watching her father paint in the same medium when she was a child. Now her chosen medium, she loves how they allow flexibility to change a work, bringing her aesthetic to completion. Painting has become a better vehicle to express her appreciation of the strength God gives and Nature’s abundant beauty.

Gold classifies herself as a representational painter, leaning into Impressionism. Now a retired women's health nurse practitioner, she has more time to devote to the canvas. This artist’s creations can be seen in area galleries, as well as online social media. Her first oil painting exhibition prize was awarded in 2015. In 2022 her art was awarded best of show in a regional exhibit. Her creations have been accepted into juried exhibits through the York Art Association and shows at the York Jewish Community Center, along with other area venues. Gold is a member of Creative York and is a juried member of the Oil Painters of America. She also serves as the Gallery committee’s chairperson and is a member of the Board of Directors for the York Art Association.

    About Kim Morrow

    BFA, Advertising, Kutztown University
    MFA, Graphic Design, Marywood University

During my professional life, I have been a graphic designer, book designer, art director, and creative team supervisor. For 19 years I was an owner/partner of a graphic design studio. The last 18 years I was an instructor of digital graphic design at a technical school, seven of which as the program director coinciding with three years as co-director of web design. I also served one year as acting drafting program director.

Mediums: Acrylic, watercolor, collage, mixed mediums, digital collage papers, gelli plate printing, pencil, marker, charcoal, colored pencils are a few that I work with regularly. I am always looking to experiment with a new technique. I also love working in 3D and enjoy book making and graphic design

My focus has become an exploration in color, texture, deconstruction layering over a structure of basic intuitive design harmony. My influences have been fine artists and great graphic designers. As an educator, I studied theories and principles of design and composition. I found I have a great love for typography so you may see letters, words and phrases creep into my work as well.

Join us for a three-day en Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop, designed for intermediate painters eager to refine their outdoor painting skills while working in their own style. Led by ten-year veteran plein air artist Nancy Fine, this workshop will focus on capturing the landscape with confidence and expression. While Nancy primarily uses a palette knife, students are encouraged to paint in the style and technique that suits them best. Each morning, we will meet at YAA before heading to scenic outdoor locations within a 20-minute drive. Nancy will begin each session with a live demonstration, answering questions while sharing her techniques, and insights for successful plein air painting.

Artists will have five hours of dedicated painting time, with one-on-one guidance throughout the day. In case of inclement weather, bring along a photo reference to paint from indoors. Nancy will also offer valuable tips on entering and competing in regional plein air competitions. Bring your gear, questions, and passion for painting outdoors!

Nancy Fine is a lifetime resident of The North County of Baltimore. This area has been the inspiration for many of her en plein air paintings. Her preferred medium is oil, though she continues to experiment with new mediums in her expression of art.

Nancy competes in many juried and non-juried shows, mainly on the East Coast. Nancy’s interest in en plein air painting has evolved over the last 10 years. Plein air has provided the perfect vehicle for expressing her love of the outdoors and awareness of nature. The success of Nancy’s work is not only the interpretation of the ever-changing natural surroundings, but her use of lush colors, the freedom of her palette knife, and use of the right brush.

How fortunate to have 24,000 acres of The Pretty Boy Water Shed in her backyard. It is the place to disappear for hours - just the artist, her easel, backpack, and her companion Luna, her mixed-breed dog who rescued her.

Whether it’s a beaver pond, a strand of trees, or a rushing stream, it is that connection. Many times locals and passersby find her in the woods and want to purchase the paintings there. She considers the woods her office.

Nancy received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Notre Dame College. She continues to study and to take numerous classes and workshops throughout the world.

Enjoy the Golden Hours, Saturdays in June!
    6/7,14, 21, 28 | 5PM - SUNSET | BEGINNER | $250M / $275NM

Discover the joy of painting in the open air with artist Jim Starr in this welcoming four-session workshop designed for beginners! Plein air, a French term meaning “in the open air” refers to the practice of painting outdoors, capturing the natural light, vibrant colors, and shifting moods of the landscape in real time.

This workshop kicks off in the studio, where Jim will walk you through the basics: gear essentials, techniques, and tips for working outside. It's a relaxed, informative session perfect for asking questions and getting comfortable with the plein air approach.

The next three Saturdays, we’ll head to scenic outdoor locations to put it all into practice. June in Pennsylvania offers a breathtaking palette- lush greens, wildflowers in bloom, and golden afternoon light- an inspiring setting for anyone eager to connect with nature through art.

Dates, Times and Location Information: (addresses will be provided to registered students.)

June 7, 9-12 pm @ York Art Association - Plein Air Introduction and Discussion. A great opportunity to ask questions, manage expectations and work out supplies.

    June 14, 5pm - Sunset @ Jay McGinnis Farm
Jay McGinnis Farm notes: This location is near Stewartstown. Jay is an artist, inventor, and sculptor. You'll find many places to paint, including his beautiful landscaping and gardens, barns, farmland vistas, and unique windmills. I'm unsure if his energetic dog, Zepher, will be racing around the farm, but she is very friendly. Just be ready for her to spring up for a kiss.

    June 21, 5pm - Sunset @ Lake Redman
Lake Redman notes: It's a pretty view of the lake you may never have seen in a secluded location. Jim found it by accident. Remember that the area is on the East side of 83, and it is NOT where they have the paddle boats and large pavilions to picnic.

June 28, 5pm - Sunset - Columbia Crossing River Trails Center
Columbia Crossing notes: At the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. This location offers a spectacular panoramic view from the visitors' center of the bridge over the river, perfect for painting. You can find more information about the location (plenty to do there and restrooms, too) on their website: https://www.susquehannaheritage.org/explore-2/columbia-crossing-river-trails-center/

WEATHER RAIN DATE (IF NEEDED) July 5, 5pm - Sunset - Makeup Date at one of the above locations.

Whether you’re new to painting altogether or just to plein air, this class is for you. Painters and pastel artists alike are welcome. Jim will provide thoughtful instruction, live demos, and personal feedback to ensure everyone gets a strong start on their plein air journey.

Come enjoy the fresh air, creativity, and camaraderie of painting outdoors!

LYNNE YANCHA  A.W.S. has received national recognition for her luminous watercolors: beautiful paintings of children, animals, still-life, and landscapes. Yancha’s sensitivity to her subjects, superb drawing, painting, and timeless realism is captivating.

Lynne resides in Mifflinburg, PA and has been conducting watercolor workshops at YAA for years. Her three day workshops are always well attended, inspirational and a good time.

"I always begin my work with musings. I am not sure that the work is so different from years past… what I am sure of is that I am different. I use the same techniques as always in a layered, lost and found way. My media continues to be mixed: watercolor, white acrylic, ink, lead and colored pencils. I like contrast, edge-to-edge interest, and a story: yours and mine. Mostly, I am absolutely in love with the mystery of inspiration and how it affects the process. I have a painting that is entirely different from the image with which I began. It tells its own story!"  - Lynne

ANDI SIMPSON lives in south central Pennsylvania, studied fine art/art history and graduated with a BFA from Frostburg State University.

She works with a variety of mediums, including acrylics, inks, and oils and considers her art to be abstract. Her work exhibits an ethereal sense of warmth, light, and love but also elicits the sensitive chaos found in nature. Her paintings begin with a foundation comprised of multiple layers of color and a variety of textures. Building from that background, she allows intuition to guide her. Defined shapes and forms present themselves organically as the piece progresses. She does not intend her work to espouse a specific message or extract a uniform reaction. Instead, she hopes to deliver a perpetually novel experience to each viewer, evoking unique visceral responses.

She created andiann studio to bring her art into the creative wedding realm and to broaden her reach beyond local and regional markets to clients’ homes across the country.

Discover the beauty of the human form through loose, expressive painting. Using acrylic, collage, and intuitive techniques, we’ll explore how to suggest figures in abstract work. Includes live model time, photo references, and creative play. Loosen up, let go, and paint with heart.

    Read on for more...

In this creative, hands-on workshop, we'll focus on discovering and abstracting the human figure in your artwork. Whether you're just beginning to incorporate people into your paintings or you're looking to loosen up and push boundaries, this class will offer tools and inspiration to help you grow.

We'll explore a variety of methods—lighting and shape recognition, reductive painting, working from photographs, and building compelling backgrounds. You'll learn how to suggest the presence of a figure without rigid outlines, using intuitive mark-making, layering, acrylic paint, and collage.

A portion of the workshop will include drawing and painting from a live, clothed model, giving you the opportunity to observe and interpret the figure in real time. Together, we'll experiment with simplifying forms, finding gestures, and letting go of perfection to embrace expressive abstraction.

Spend the day with me learning to trust your eye, loosen your brushstrokes, and bring a soulful human element into your art.

KIM MORROW, BFA, Advertising, Kutztown University , MFA, Graphic Design, Marywood University

ANN BENTON YEAGER is a Lancaster County native from the college town of Millersville, from a family of accomplished artists, including her Great Uncle, Thomas Hart Benton. Inspired by a rock she painted for a garden in 2009, she fell in love with abstract art during an experimental mixed media class. She now works with various mediums like acrylic, oil, and encaustic, incorporating textures like cheesecloth and sand into her pieces. Despite her short time painting, Ann has received many awards and has been internationally published in the International Contemporary Artists, Volume XI, publication. Her  mother, Linda Benton McCloskey, is also an accomplished artist who has been internationally published several times, has won countless awards and is an avid arts teacher. Ann believes abstract art is endless in its possibilities, and infinite in design. The Acrylic Pouring technique aka Fluid Art allows artists to apply color in puddles, pools, and marble-like patterns. Pouring results in a smooth, glossy paint film that is perfectly even and blemish free. There are no paintbrushes necessary for this technique. It is particularly popular with beginners as it allows artists to create quick paintings with dramatic, contemporary results.

Art and creation has always been an integral part of my life. I began creating early on as a necessary form of self expression, creating costumes, portraits, illustrations – anything that was required to enrich my life experience and promote whimsy in the everyday. Becoming an art educator has contributed even further, providing a space in which I can support students of all ages in pursuing their whimsy and passion for creation. My own art is inspired by nature and humans, particularly people from the past. Photography from the 1800-1900’s fascinates me and presents a ghostlike portrait that presents a different facet of identity that I enjoy exploring in my own work. I’ve continued themes of nature and figures in my ceramic works, investigating the uncanny valley in both functional and decorative ceramic pieces. My most recent work has expanded into sola wood flower creation, working to bring wedding day dreams to life. I’ve continued expanding in my art education outside of Public School as well, teaching at Creative York, The York Art Association, Creatives on King, through Arts in Residence (Cultural Alliance), as well as my own business, Reptile Smiles. Combining animal advocates and art creation has been a powerful teaching tool that inspires students of all ages to create unhindered. Finally, I’ve stepped into the role of Curator at Creatives on King, working to advocate for, empower, and guide artists in their journey in the creation and sale of their work.

YESENIA "JESSIE" GROFT began her artistic journey as a child, often drawing alongside her father as he created beautiful oil paintings. Her love for painting was rekindled several years ago while attending a paint night with friends.

What began as a simple hobby developed into a motivating passion. As an artist, Jessie continues to hone in her style and technique. She learned techniques through tried and true methods, such as the Charles Bargue drawing course and sight-size.

As an instructor, she seeks to enthusiastically share her heartfelt belief that we all can learn to draw and paint to some degree – it just takes time to patiently learn and practice. She teaches her students to be willing to try new things and not to fear failure.

Her favorite mediums are charcoal on paper and acrylic on stretched or wooden canvas.
She is a proud member of the York Art Association where she teaches youth classes.
